Greenwood residents can commence their holiday season this weekend in Uptown Greenwood. The Uptown Holiday Open House and Emerald Triangle Arts and Cultural District’s “A Holiday Evening” begin tonight, Friday, Nov. 9.
Uptown Greenwood’s Holiday Open House is a huge event for Uptown merchants to help kick off the festive season. Stores decorate their shop windows to prepare for holiday shopping while the Uptown Greenwood Development Corporation, the City of Greenwood and Greenwood CPW pull together to decorate Uptown with Christmas lights and much more.
The Emerald Triangle Arts and Cultural District presents “A Holiday Evening” with its three neighboring organizations: The Arts Center, The Museum and the Greenwood Community Theatre. The magical evening begins at 5:30 p.m. this evening with free receptions at the Arts Center and The Museum, both open to the public.
The Arts Center is hosting the public awards presentation for the Multi-Guild Juried Arts Show. The show features works from three local guilds including Greenwood Artists Guild, Council of Lakeland Area Woodworkers and Greenwood Area Studio Potters. Wine and hors d’eurves will be served at the reception. The exhibit opened Nov. 6 and will continue to be shown at the Arts Center through Nov. 30.
The Museum will open its famous Christmas Village display to the public at 5:30 p.m., also. The Department 56 Christmas Village is recreated every year at The Museum. It features a beautiful, snowy scene of New York City during the holiday season including views of Yankee Stadium and Radio City Music Hall. The display spans over 150 square feet of The Museum.
The Greenwood Community Theatre will open its doors at 7:30 p.m. for the festive evening showing of Smoke on the Mountain. This hugely popular musical is an audience and holiday favorite. More than two-dozen songs and hilarious stories from the Sanders Family Singers provide hilarious entertainment for everyone. Tickets cost $20 for adults and $10 for children.
Beginning tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 10, Uptown Greenwood will play host to a number of holiday events for local families and children. From 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. – 5p.m., children can share their Christmas wish list and get a picture with Santa Claus at the City Gazebo. Santa will also share cookies and a story at The Arts Center’s annual Story Time with Santa beginning at 1 p.m. at The Museum. Free carriage rides throughout Uptown begin at 4 p.m., and The Rock N’ Roll Cruisers Holiday Cruise-in at the fountain parking lot begins at 5 p.m. Locals can also witness the lighting of the Uptown Christmas Tree tomorrow evening at 7 p.m.
Closing up the weekend holiday festivities on Sunday, Nov. 11 are free carriage rides from 2 until 5 p.m. and more photographs with Santa at the gazebo from 1:30 until 5 p.m.
