Maybe you just happened upon Emerald's Home Page and you are wondering where in the
world Greenwood, SC is! Here, let me show you on a map.
To explain the southern beauty and charm of Greenwood, let us quote from
"A Visitor's Guide to Greenwood":
"In 1823, John McGehee, Jr. of Cambridge built a log house for his bride-to-be on his
600 acre plantation. It is said Mrs. McGehee named their summer home " Green
Wood," and later gave name to the small village that grew around it."
Greenwood was chartered in 1857 and is the ninth largest city in South Carolina.
More than 11,400 acres of sparkling water and 200 miles of shoreline.
Recreation activities include fishing, boating, picniccing, camping, swimming and eating
at a variety of restaurants. Lake Greenwood State Park has a pine and hardwood forest with
a scenic nature trail and full hook-up camp sites.
Every June, Greenwood County hosts the South Carolina Festival Flowers. Over
15,000 varieties of flowers are on display at Park Seed's gardens. These six days of
festivities are named one of the Southeast Tourism's "Top 20" events and include
private tours, arts and crafts, sports, the Flotilla at Lake Greenwood, flower and
horticulture shows, and music for all ages.
